As a consultant to 3M/Unitek, I was a member of the development team that resulted in what we know today as Orthocad, so I've been around 3D models for a while. I would like to commend Motion View Software on their development of an in house system for scanning of impressions and/or models specifically for the orthodontist. The software allows you to go from impression to a 3D viewable model, in occlusion, in only a few minutes. Your "quick pours" and stored models can also be easily transferred to a digital image allowing you to reduce your model storage problems completely. This feature alone pays for the system.
The fact that the scanner is in the office allows the doctor to be in control, on time, and completely in house, for the entire operation. The software includes features such as measurements, Bolton analysis and occlusal evaluation to name a few. Motion View Software has found, in my opinion, the "Holy Grail" of 3D modeling; that of object segmentation by the simple click of the button. This allows the doctor to do diagnostic set ups, all without wax! They did their homework and provided a system in which the files are all in an open format that doesn't tie you to a specific system- what a thought!
